I am an artist who loves sketching rockets and space launches. I believe that an artist must be a witness of contemporary events and cannot stay apart while history is happening. I have chosen to sketch the important moments of space exploration with the most common and immediate media: a ssketchbook and a pen. I use urban sketching, live drawing with simple tools, because, after all, a space launch is not that different from a concert or celebration.
After the live sketching session made during the event like a launch, splashdown, moon flyby, etc. I make one or more post-production sessions. During those sessions I do my best to bring out the emotional charge and meaning I wanted to comunicate. Here below you will find the series sketched by now. Every time I make a new one you will find it here.
To the Moon and back
The Artemis II launch has been postponed twice: initially scheduled for February 2026, it was moved to March 6-11, 2026, due to technical issues. It was then further postponed to April 2026.
April 1, 2026, at 6:35 PM local time, Artemis II lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, carrying a human crew aboard the Orion Integrity capsule to our natural satellite after more than 50 years. This time, I had to settle for live streaming, as no channel in Italy was broadcasting live.
On April 11, 2026, after 9 days, 1 hour, and 32 minutes of the mission, a successful splashdown of Orion Integrity in the Pacific Ocean brought back to Earth the astronauts Reid Wiseman (NASA), Victor Glover (NASA),Christina Koch (NASA) and Jeremy Hansen (CSA).

First try. Space X
On May 30, 2020, I attempted my first try at sketching the launch. It was the first “Space X” spacecraft Falcon-Dragon and I sketched it from a television broadcast. It was a historic moment because it marked the first time a private company had sent humans into orbit.
The initial launch has been scheduled from Launch Pad 39A in Florida for May 27, 2020. After and extremely long live broadcast, the date was postponed due to weather conditions “not go”.
I was a good sport and I took it as an exercise for the launch of several days after.
Rocket men and women
Behind any great enterprise, there are simple people with great ideas and motivation. I always dedicate some of my sketches to those who made the launch possible, the everyday heroes like the technical staff, ground control staff, and the astronauts.
I have a dream
My dream is to sketch a space launch “en plein air”. I would like to tell with my art about the everyday reality of space exploration made of hard work, courage and dreams. I am sure that the sounds, colours and athmosphwere of the moment will make my drawings special. I’m still waiting for my moment. Perhaps I’ll get sketch our planet from a spaceship porthole.
